Locals under shock of flood, Power tariff hike: MLA Tral | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Sep 20:Expressing anguish over the hike in electricity tariff in Tral area of south Kashmir, MLA Tral Mushtaq Ahmad Shah has termed this decision of power department an unjust. In a press statement issued here Mushtaq Ahmad said, the flood on September 16 has led to huge destruction in Tral, especially in the villages of zone Satoora and zone Noorpora. The heavy downpour resulted in flash floods causing damage to dozens of houses and washing away number of bridges. More than 20 villages got affected due to flash floods in Lam River. Including several houses scores of cowsheds were severely damaged in several villages. The orchards and farm fields bore the brunt of sudden change in the weather resulting in heavy losses to horticulture and agriculture sector in the area. The farmers suffered huge losses on account of paddy, maize and walnut production. Mushtaq said it is unjust by the power department to double the tariff of electricity at this hour of crisis in the area. He said on the one hand government is still assessing the damages in the area while o the other hand power department announced the fee hike. Condemning this step of power department, Mushtaq asserted that this has added to the agony of the locals. He said the power department should reconsider their decision while keeping the present condition of the habitants of the area who are still under trauma of the natural calamity just happened few days ago. He said that the losses occurred to the department is because of the fact that nearly 70% of the LT/HT lines are not functional. It would rather be better if they took measure to repair those dysfunctional LT/HT lines and install new electric poles in the area.
