Female foeticide a heinous crime: Sham
Seeks people’s co-operation for curbing menace

SRINAGAR, Sep 20:-Taking a strong note of the functioning of the female foeticide clinics in the valley, the Minster for Health and Family Welfare, Sham Lal Sharma today stressed upon the medical fraternity to implement the pre conception and pre natal sex selection/determination (Prohibition and regulation) Act-2002 (PNDT) strictly with letter and spirit in the valley to curb the menace of female foeticide.
The Minister was addressing one day ‘workshop on pre conception and pre natal sex determination technique’ organized by the state health society National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) J&K today here.
Minister reminded the medical fraternity including CMO’s/medical superintendents/BMO’s, NGO’s and other concerned medical officers their responsibilities towards a better and healthy society and added that it is very unfortunate that this kind of heinous crime is still being carried by some money mongers, medical professionals and warned them to desist from doing such kind of heinous and unpardonable practice and said that they will be sternly dealt under PNDT Act. He emphasized upon them to lead in eliminating this menace of female foeticide from the society. He said, it was imperative that this heinous crime against humanity be stopped henceforth. The Minister sought the help of the specialists from different fields including NGOs, religious leaders, electronic and print media to curb this menace from the society.
The Minister expressed concern over the declining sex ratio in the state and needs urgent address. He said, no doubt the government has already taken a number of steps to curb this crime, but there is a great responsibility upon the civil society members, along with medical fraternity, particularly media and NOGs to play a great role and aware the people about the female foeticide and its repercussions on the society in
the future.
Calling woman as most precious part of the society, he said, that by decreasing the sex ration would ultimately have bad effects on the society and said the time has come when whole society including male domination to change their mindset that the girl is not a burden.
