China drawing a ring round India | | | If New Delhi continues to feel perturbed over the political and military activities of China there is a definite cause for it. Apart from adopting belligerent postures against India Beijing has been on the look out for an opportunity for befriending all those countries that are around India. Right from mid 70's China has succeeded in cultivating Pakistan and consequently Islamabad highly welcomed military, moral, diplomatic, economic and political aid it has been receiving from Beijing. It is because of the Chinese assistance that Pakistan has further developed its nuclear arsenal and missile technology to the dis-avantage of India. In fact China believes in one politial adage befriend your enemy's enemy. For the last over 40 years India - China relations have dwindled from the Hindi - Chini Bhayee Bhayee to one of mistrust and conflict. Since the relations between New Delhi and Islamabad been soured because of unsettled Kashmir issue Beijing thought it better to use Pakistan for needling India and this is what has been happening since mid 70's. Even after having developed military and economic ties with Nepal and Sri Lanka Beijing's lust for extra-territorial adventure has not been satisfied. It has forged military ties with Bangladesh. An agreement on mutal cooperation has been signed between the Chinese Defence Minister, Liang Guanglie, and the Bangla-desh Army Chief, Gen.Mohd. Abdul Mubeen during his recent visit to Beijing. Gen. Mubeen stated soon after the agreement that Dhaka will further promote military-to-military relations with Beijing. The Chinese Defence Minister further assured Bangladesh Army Chief that Beijing was willing to enhance interactions with Bangladesh in all fields and at all levels to advance bilateral and military relations. As far as Pakistan and Bangladesh are concerned the two muslim countries have been trying to secure military and economic aid and assistance from both the Asian and the western giants. On one hand Washington has been providing military and nonmilitary aid to Islamabad worth several millions of dollars every year but on the other Pakistan has been keen to increase its weaponary strength, including missiles, tanks and fighter planes,by keeping the 35-year old military ties with Baijing intact. Washington pumped several hundred million dollars to Islamabad as aid when floods ravaged Pakistan affecting the lives of 20 million people. But Islamabad in general and its Army and the ISI in particular have been utilising part of the US economic and military aid for butter-essing the entire mechanism for exporting terror to India. Since Pakistan has promised Washington that it would continue to support the US war against terror Islamabad has greater significance for the US Government than New Delhi has. Similarly by providing heavy military aid to Islamabad China wants to build Pakistan's military capability so that it can match India' defence preparedness. Beijing is following the same principle of helping Bangla-desh, which has recently been a beneficiary of New Delhi's economic aid, to build its war machinery that could prove, at some point of time, deterimental to the interests of India. |
