| Bhaderwah, Poonch College win ties in men’s chess | | |  EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 20: Government Degree College Bhaderwah and Government Degree College Poonch won their respective matches to move into the third round of quarterfinals in the men’s category in ongoing inter-college chess tournament at GGM Science College, here today.
In the first match, Bhaderwah College outplayed Government Degree College Reasi 3-1. The Results: Sachin Singh bt Talab Hussain; Sheikh Rizwan Ahmed bt Vishal Banathia; Ravi Kant bt Ganesh Singh; Ch. Vikar Ahmed lost to Kuldeep Kumar.
The Degree College Poonch also won their second round tie against Government Degree College Samba beating latter 3-1. The Results: Dheeraj Sharma bt Vijay Kumar; Abhishek Uttam bt Deepak Salgotra; Waseem Sajad bt Nitish Sambyal; Aftab Hussain lost to Abhinav Sambyal.
Other four scheduled matches ended in walkovers. While GCET got walkover ASCOMS, GDC Akhnoor awarded walkover Dental College Seora. In other matches, GDC Hiranagar got walkover GDC Bishnah while teams from PG Departments and SRS College failed to report.
JU fails to field PG team
Surprisingly, the organisers of the inter-college competitions, the University of Jammu failed to field its own team of Post Graduate (PG) Departments thus earned a bad name, especially in the presence of participants from far off colleges of Bhaderwah and Poonch.
Walkovers galore in women chess
Meanwhile, as many as three of the four scheduled matches in women’s section ended in walkover while the fourth match was won by GGM Science College beating Government Degree College Samba 3-1. The Results: Usha Virdhi bt Anuradha; Manisha shishu bt Surbhi Gupta; Karanjeet Kour bt Anshul Sambyal; Bandan Devi lost to Kumari Pooja.
WALKOVERS: GDC Udhampur got walkover SRS College; GCW Gandhi Nagar got walkover Dogra Law College; SPMR College of Commerce got walkover GDC R S Pura.
