PoK refugees court arrest, released
9/20/2011 10:10:36 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu , Sept 20
Hundreds of PoK displaced people today staged a demonstration and offered their arrest at Bakshi Nagar Police Station in protest against the failure of Government to settle their demands.
The protestors with flags and banners in their hands were shouting slogans against the callous attitude of the Government towards their demands. The protestors included a seizable number of women and children. They warned to continue the struggle till it reached its logical conclusion.
Earlier the protestors led by Rachpal Singh Chib president of PoK Refugees Front, which is spearheading the agitation, took out a procession from Gole market to Gandhi Nagar Police Station this afternoon before courting arrest. They staged a peaceful demonstration on road in front of Police Station. However all the arrested refugees were released later.
He said these hapless people were displaced in 1947, 1965 and 1971 wars and their entire property was gifted by Government of India to Pakistan under Shimla Agreement in 1972. Thousands of non camp refugees have been registered till date but after the passage of so many years their problems have not been solved, he added.
Chib said that two generations of these hapless refugees have vanished passing the days in abject poverty and miseries but successive governments did not pay any heed to settle the issue and fulfill the promises made with them from time to time.
Making a scathing attack on State Government he said it always became a stumbling block in redressal of their problems and providing them the comprehensive settlement package.
He said the majority of these refuges were settled at Indo-Pak border and they faced interment skirmishes and heavy firing by the Pak army. He warned that the Front will continue its agitation for the rights of the DPs numbering about 15 lakh to 20 lakh and the ongoing movement of court arrest will continues till the refugees were provided with justice.
