Early Times Report
JAMMU/SAMBA, Sept 20: A sub-inspector was killed and a civilian wounded in an ambush by the Pak Rangers from across the International Border (IB) at Galad in Samba sector near here this afternoon.
India lodged strong protest with Pakistan, saying the firing by its Rangers was unprovoked and led to the violation of ceasefire. The incident took place at about 2.30 pm.
This is the second ceasefire violation by Pakistan on IB in the past over a week. On September 12 last, Pak had resorted to heavy firing in Ramgarh sub-sector of Samba and tried to push five armed militants into the Indian territory. The infiltration bid was, however, foiled by the alert BSF personnel.
DIG BSF (Jammu frontier) JS Oberoi said Pakistan fired at a BSF patrol at Galad close to the IB this afternoon, resulting in the death of SI Ram Chand Rana (55) of Saket Colony, Dehradoon, and bullet injuries to Sudesh Kumar, son of Om Prakash of Galad.
Police sources, however, said Sudesh and his tractor had been engaged by BSF to clear the area of sarkanda (long thick grass). While he drove the tractor through the sarkanda, SI Rana sat beside him, the sources added.
Sources said the Rangers targetted them on the tractor, resulting in critical injuries to both of them. They were evacuated to the Samba district hospital where doctors declared Rana brought dead. Sudesh was undergoing treatment at the hospital and his condition was stated to be out of danger.
Soon after this incident, heavy firing broke out between the two sides in Ramgarh sub-sector when the Rangers fired at Chak Faqir outpost of BSF. Sources said two Rangers died in the Indian action across Chak Faqir as the Pakistanis were seen dragging the dead to their post. Intermittent exchange of fire between the two sides at Chak Faqir was continuing when reports last came in.
BSF IG Ashok Kumar Jain, DIG Oberoi and DIG (BSF) Varinder Singh visited the spot at Galad and boosted the morale of troops. They also went to Samba hospital where the SI's body was kept in the mortuary. It was likely to be despatched his home at Dehradoon on Wednesday.
Security was further stepped up on the IB after the today's unprovoked firing as intelligence inputs suggested that Pak would try to push militants into the state under the cover of fire and thick sarkanda. Police and VDCs had also been put on high alert.
