Mahbooba, Omar `lock horns' for Modi, Sushma | `Politics makes strange bed fellows' | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 20: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mahbooba Mufti's statement praising Gujarat Chief Minister Narender Singh Modi has evoked a comment from the state chief Minister. According to Omar's latest tweet, Mahbooba has backtracked from her Modi comments. "I'm not surprised Mahbooba praised Modi, she can praise who ever she likes; I am surprised she'd deny it knowing others heard her speech", Omar tweeted. Abdullah also advised her to admit the fact that she had praised Modi. Mahbooba's statement and Omar's tweets prove it beyond doubt that both the leaders have not understood the ground situation in its right perspectives. Both of them know no hearts beat for Modi in Kashmir. The indifference of Kashmiris to national developments has been a cause of worry for the powers that be in New Delhi and Srinagar. Praising Modi, therefore, won't erode Mahbooba's support base in Kashmir. Similarly criticizing BJP or Modi won't do Omar any good. Omar further advised her to stop defaming the senior BJP leader by labeling her a liar. In his tweet Omar wrote, "Why can't she just admit what she said rather than deny the whole thing. So much more graceful to accept rather than call Ms Swaraj a liar". Omar also took a dig at senior Mufti. "At least her father had the sense not to deny calling Laloo, as Home Minister, to order Advani's release, he just did what Ostriches do." The mention of senior Mufti, Kashmir watchers believe is totally uncalled for. In his verbal dual with Mahboba, he should not have cast aspersions on senior Mufti, they believe. What if somebody drags in his (Omar's) grandfather and father in the controversy? Sher-e-Kashmir hated Congress so much so that he urged the people to boycott them. This happened in early 70s. Senior citizens say the boycott wreaked havoc with their lives. People did not even attend their funeral. Sher-e-Kashmir also called them `insects of the gutter'. But a few years later, he returned to power with Congress support. Once again the Congress ditched him. Instead of learning a lesson, his son Dr Farooq Abdullah forged an alliance with later Rajiv Gandhi. This is where the `doom' of Kashmir and Kashmiriyat started. Had the duo not rigged the 1987 elections, the situation would have been different today. As they say politics makes strange bed fellows, the relation with Congress continues. Omar and Rahul Gandhi are friends. The friendship has ensured a six year term for Omar in the office. Omar has left the bitterness of the past behind. Why should he observe August 9 as black day even if his great grandfather was dethroned and arrested on that day in 1953? And Omar's father like his grandfather owes allegiance to India only while in power. When out of power Sher-e-Kashmir nurtured separatist tendencies. Similarly Farooq questioned accession in 2007 during a book release in Jammu. He was out of power then! But as soon as National Conference returned to power, Farooq became more Indian than the Indians and started firing paper missiles towards Pakistan. Mufti Sayed on the other hand never questioned accession. He was an Indian when in power and while out of power he stayed an Indian. Last year, Omar challenged the totality of accession. He said Jammu Kashmir was a disputed territory and had international dimensions. This is exactly what Geelani and other separatists say. Whey keep them behind the bars? |
