JKCA's journey from Jadeja to Bedi vFunctioning far from being satisfactory | | Rajesh Dhar | 9/21/2011 8:21:16 PM |
| Yeah What is this hullaballoo about the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association's decision [JKCA's] of hiring Test cricketer Bishen Singh Bedi to coach J&K cricketers. Today, uppermost in the minds of state cricketers is legendary Bedi. It has come to be the most debated, outspoken and a common place topic of discussion throughout the cricket community. Bedi, Bedi and receive coaching from Bedi is the slogan of the day. Unquestionably, in Bedi's presence, the JKCA has begun the season with a positive note by picking a reasonably good 20-member squad for this season's Ranji trophy [though players like Shashi Kumar, Ravi Pandita and Arshad Bhat should consider themself unfortunate for not been picked]. But, at the same time, the selectors can not please everybody. Now, the questions arise as to does Bedi have a magic wand to change the fortune of J&K cricket and is his contract with JKCA a lasting solution to the chronic problem? Perhaps not, because the state has tasted the fruit of hiring the high profile coaches many a time in the past also. By going into the philosophy of JKCA's journey from the tenure of Ajay Jadeja in 2000-01 to Devender Arora to Partha Sarthi to Jayanti Lal and not to talk of Bishen Singh Bedi, one learns that it was only young and energetic Jadeja who had helped in enhancing the standard of cricket and the cricketers in the state. Otherwise, the performance of state Ranji team has drastically declined from time to time and Partha's magic, Arora's skill and Jayanti's experience failed to manage even a single win. However, the secret behind Jadeja's success was that he apart from being young coach was captain of the team also, which helped him to understand the psyche of the players to make them play as a cohesive unit. Otherwise, in the scheme of things in JKCA rather in the prevailing system expecting even the coaches of repute to improve standard of the game is simply to flog a dead horse. Or, in other words, expecting juicy fruits from the plants having dry roots is to cry for the moon. I mean the cricket system here is poor rather jaundiced from the grass-roo t level and it needs overhauling from the club level, because most of the clubs are represented by illegal and unauthorized members. That is why the functioning of JKCA is and has been far from being satisfactory. The organization is not system driven. It is person driven. For that matter, hiring high quality coaches to train state cricketers is not the lasting solution for setting the things right in the jaundiced JKCA. So, hiring Bedi did not set Thames on Fire. What is needed is to nurture roots rather than shoots. Why JKCA is jaundiced? See. An act exposing hollow functioning: The holding of working committee meeting on 23-3-2011 has been an act of hollow functioning of the JKCA as the formation of this committee was illegal, unauthorized and not in accordance with rules and conventions. The approval of the same by the president has also been unauthorized and unconstitutional. The demand of setting the working committee in order was most illegally and undemocratically turned down by the presiding officer. Transparency regretfully missing: The basic elements of transparency in JKCA accounts as also in administrative matters since 2006 have been regretfully missing despite the fact that the JKCA is basically is a society registered under the State Registration of Societies Act. But unfortunately the functioning has been like that of a private business. Mock and illegal show: The denial of providing a fair procedure for conducting a working committee meet like setting the house in order, not allowing the minutes of previous working committee meeting to be confirmed, going for elections by show of hands and not by secret ballot and not presenting accounts for inspection by working committee members has rendered the meeting of 23-6-2011 to be mock and illegal show. The fact that 24 members of the working committee dissociated themselves from the proceedings of the meeting shows how the meeting was held and the very fact that 9 other genuine members nominated by their clubs were not allowed inside the venue of the meeting speaks volumes about the illegality of the meeting. Act of omission and commission :- As alleged by the former General Secretary JKCA that the sale of wooden deodar sleepers (over 16000 cut in volume) by the over staying officer bearers of JKCA, without competence and authority at a throw away and paltry sum of rupees 34 lacs (i.e @ Rs 212 per cft as against the prevailing market rate of Rs 2400 per cft and by following most objectionable procedure is a classic example of omission and commission. Framing Sub Committees Unconstitutionally:- The JKCA Constitution has been thrown to winds by the chairman by framing sub committees having more than seven members , although the rules are crystal clear that each sub committee should possess only three to five members. What is shell -shocking is that chairman himself is the chairman of almost all the subcommittees. In such a Scenario expecting miracles from the coaches like legendary Bedi is to red -rag a bull. So, hiring Bedi's , Jayantilals, Parthasarthi's and Arora's can hardly save the JKCA from further drowning in the ocean of money and lust for the same and the chair. |
