| Those Misusing Red Cross Emblem to be Fined: J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT

The Jammu and Kashmir government today issued a stern warning to those misusing the Red Cross emblem on their vehicles, saying a drive will be launched to curb this practice in the Valley.
"Misuse of Red Cross emblem shall not be tolerated," Divisional Commissioner (Kashmir) Abdul Majid Mir said while chairing a high-level meeting of officers here.
The misuse of Red Cross emblem was going on despite protests by Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
Not only civilians, but even several government departments staff, including those from health and police, have been accused of misusing the emblem.
The official directed the Red Cross to create awareness among public to stop misuse of the symbol.
"Any vehicle found displaying Red Cross symbol should be challaned (fined)," Mir said.
As per the provisions of the Geneva Convention Acts of 1949 and 1960, unauthorised use of the emblem is a punishable offence in the country with a fine of Rs 500. Besides, the vehicles and goods on which the emblem has been used without authorisation are liable to be seized.
