GDC Akhnoor celebrates International Peace day | | | Early Times Report Akhnoor, September 21: Government Degree College Akhnoor celebrated International Day of Peace at college. The Red Cross unit of college in collaboration with Darhal (Rajouri) based Peace NGO Attitude Change International organized a seminar on “Ways to attaining sustainable peace” on the occasion. Principal of College, Dr. Kaushal Smotra, chief guest on the occasion, commenced the programme by lightening the candle, and with a prayer for world peace. The speakers underlined the need of education for sustainable peace and development. They said that introduction of peace education at all levels is key for attaining sustainable peace in the world. They emphasised on opting tolerance, non-violence, mutual respect, understanding and communal harmony as means to achieving peace within national boundaries and across globe. Volunteers (students) of Red Cross at college presented peace songs and poetry on peace, brotherhood and co-existence. The winner students were also given appreciation prizes. Initiated by United Nations on September 21, 1981, the International Peace Day received second consecutive celebration with fervour at this college. Amid state-wide strike ample number of students and staff members attended this function. “Join Peace, quit war”, “Peace is beautiful, war is ugly”, “Peace is the key to prosperity” were some of the slogans demonstrating this year’s observance focusing on peace and democracy under the UN theme “Make Your Voice Heard.” Earlier, Dr. M. Ashaq Malik, Officer in-charge, Red Cross Unit at College, and a peace worker introduced the participants about the Day and its pertinence to celebrating in the college. He said that both parents and teachers can play a pivotal role in transforming peace among future generations.
