Lawrence School observes International Peace Day | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sep 21: UN International Day of Peace was celebrated in Lawrence Public School, Sidhra. A special assembly was conducted in the school to mark the UN International Day of Peace. Students in the assembly were informed that the United Nations announced earlier this year that the theme for this year’s International Day of Peace 2011 will be ‘Peace & Democracy - Make Your Voice Heard’. A large number of students spoke in this special assembly. A student of the school Seerat-Un-Nisa spoke largely on International Day of Peace and informed that this day provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. She further informed that it was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. The first Peace Day was celebrated in September 1982. International Day of Peace is also a Day of Ceasefire – personal or political. Later the students and teachers pledged to use this occasion as an opportunity to promote their year round efforts, whether their focus is on human rights, the environment, humanitarian relief, helping the poor, educating friends about health care or cooperation & understanding amongst each other. They promised to participate in creating various types of promotions - privately, or with friends and family as the combination of all of these activities creates long term impact on our surroundings. A two minutes silence was observed by all the students and teachers towards the end of this special assembly.
