DB Issues notice in PIL regarding increasing Vehicular Accidents | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, September-22 :- In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding increasing vehicular accidents in J&K, Division Bench of J&K High Court comprising Chief Justice F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla and Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar has issued notices to State of J&K through Chief Secretary, Commissioner/Secretary Transport, IG Traffic and Transport Commissioner J&K, returnable within two weeks. The PIL filed by some doctors in the State High Court has sought directions to State respondents to stop registration of new vehicles in the State of J&K till some visible and actual measures are enforced to check vehicular pollution and other traffic violations. In the PIL it has been submitted by the petitioners namely Dr. Davinder Singh Jasrotia, Dr. Tejinder Kumar, Dr. Jang Bhadur Singh, Dr. Harsh Sharma and Dr. Kailash Chander through advocate Rohit Kapoor that 1300 people have died and about 10,000 injured in road accidents in J&K in the passed 15 months. According to official data 11 people lost their lives and in 5945 accidents in 2009. This is in addition to 8199 persons who sustained injuries, both critical and minor in these accidents. The PIL it has been also sought directions to respondents to ensure strict compliance of traffic laws/ regulations and safety regulations that should be monitored by an independent authority as may be appointed/nominated by the Court and regarding Vehicular pollution which can cause lungs ailments due to emission of nitrogen oxides, the PIL has prayed for stopping further registrations of new vehicles in the State of J&K till some visible measures are enforced to check vehicular pollution and other traffic measures. The noticed issued by the Division Bench was accepted by the additional advocate General A.H. Qazi for the state respondents.
