Don't browbeat, be polite while dealing with public: DGP to cops, field officers | Proposal to enhance SPOs' salary from Rs 3,000 to 5,000 sent to Centre | | Early times report JAMMU, Sept 22: Asking cops and field officers not to frighten public with stern looks and words while dealing with them, DGP Kuldeep Khoda today said a proposal to enhance SPOs' honorarium from Rs 3,000 to 5,000 had been sent to the Centre. Addressing cops and officers after inaugurating new DPL building at Reasi, he asked them to be polite while dealing with public, police sources said.Khoda stressed the need for maintaining cordial police-public relations through regular police-public meetings, civic action programmes and polite behaviour. The DGP has made such requests to his subordinates in the past too but these seem to have minimal effect on them. There have been numerous allegations of inhuman torture and custodial killings at police stations in the recent past. But it is regretful to note that despite protests by the victims' families and reports in newspapers, the DGP never reacted, or pronounced action against the erring cops. In some cases, the "overbearing" SHOs were transferred from one police station to another. This is the maximum punishment they got. With regard to the enhancement of honorarium to SPOs from Rs 3,000 to 5,000, he said a proposal in this regard had already been sent to the central government. "A quota of 15 per cent has also been set up for SPOs for their enrollment in police," he informed. At Reasi DPL, grievances of police personnel was redressed on the spot by the DGP, the sources added. He said 342 militants of different organizations were active in Reasi since the eruption of militancy in the district but they were eliminated by police and other allied forces who also managed the surrender of 41 militants. Khoda appreciated the efforts of the jawans for having made Reasi militancy free. He was also shown arms and ammunition recovered in Reasi during anti-militancy operations. These included one RPG, three pika rifles, one LMG, six AK rifles, 11 UBGLs, 52 UBGL grenades,11 other grenades, 16 kg RDX and 3,010 rounds of different weapons. The function at Reasi was attended by IGP Dilbag Singh, DIG (Udhampur-Reasi), Jagjit Kumar, Reasi deputy commissioner Pandurang K Pole, SSP Keshav Ram Chaurasia, SSP (CID, SB) Rajinder Gupta, commandant of JKAP 12th Bn, and SSP (CID, CI). Later, accompanied by Dilbag, Khoda visited Udhampur where he inaugurated newly constructed office-cum-residential building for additional SP at DPL.At Udhampur, he also interacted with prominent persons. Speaking on the occasion, Udhampur deputy commissioner asked the prominent citizens to highlight their problems as regards law and order, or any other problem to be redressed by the DPG. The people requested the DGP for on spot recruitment of unemployed youth in police, to raise the wages of SPOs, pay salary to VDC members on due time and make reservation for the widows of volunteer home guards. A request was also made to make purchases of essentialities in SKPAU through local businessmen of Udhampur and seize weapons of criminals and other mischievous persons in the district. With regard to on spot recruitment in police in Udhampur, the DGP assured them that such a programme could be chalked out after the conclusion of the forthcoming assembly session. He also assured them a complete transparency in the process of recruitment. He also expected a feed back from people with regard to identification of anti-social and anti-national elements. In his address, Dilbagh complimented the role of police in the conduct of incident-free Shri Amar Nath yatra and Independence day celebrations.
