Lathicharge,Jammu police & human rights | | S.S. Rissam | 9/22/2011 11:12:20 PM |
| These days lathicharge is commonly witnessed in Jammu city whether it is on the occasion of peaceful protest rallies of government employees who walk against the government for pressing their demands or the poor students who were fighting for the cause of Central University-Jammu. Government employees and students who protest to vent their ire against the government always do it peacefully as it is one of their rights. But it does not matter whether it is peaceful protest or violent protest because they are always welcomed with lathis. They don't engage in stone pelting with the police as is witnessed in Kashmir where youth is used by the anti social elements to fight with the police. Why nobody talks of this human right violation which is clearly done by the police in Jammu? Where are the concerned bodies and activists who work for human rights? Do we just need to talk when innocent people get killed in police custody? Is it only then the human rights will be considered to be violated? What about those who are delivered deadly blows in front of all people and this act of police getting recorded in electronic eye of media? All of us must have seen the TV clip of lathis being raised on defenseless protestors and they being kicked by the cops. We cannot say all cops are bad, but the system that protects these cops is bad. Why nobody talks to protect the people who are mercilessly beaten? Is it not a human rights violation just because there are bigger issues to be talked about in J&K of human rights? Poor protestors, first getting beaten at the hands of police and then getting beaten because of poor political will. With lathicharge the humanity seems choked in the loose ends of the khaki raj who are facilitated by the politicians who worry not about the peoples right but just about their rights in the corridors of politics & power. Lathi charge is a mode of attack favored by Jammu cops when attacking protesters by using sticks. Cops are seen hitting and running after the protestors randomly and beating the nearest available protestor. They are like on a hunting spree trying to nail down who so ever comes in front of their lathi. This is the most common technique used by the police in Jammu where ever there is protest and method is used to terrorize protestors. Lathicharge is used to disperse the protestors and cause maximum amount of pain, in the hope that they would be compelled to move away from the scene and their demands would die down. In most cases, police hit at the arms or legs and at times at the head and vital organs when they do it mercilessly. The lathi charge is clear violation of human rights and people are brutally assaulted by the police without the fear of anybody as their bosses always give a green signal for it. This is an inhuman behavior on the part of the police which uses lathicharge while the government with sealed lips of silence is a mute spectator to all this brutality. While lathi charge is done police adopts barbaric methods like pull hair, kick, blows & punch. At times there are serious injuries to the protestors and nobody speaks for them and they are left at their own to live life with those grievous injuries. Why all such things are seen with a close eye & people are mercilessly beaten by police? Are people beaten just because that they speak for their right or that they highlight the various wrongs done by any particular authority? This hitting done with lathi will not lead to stopping of all these protests because it may end the protestor but not the protests. We need to wake up, rise and raise our voice against this brutality |
