| 32nd National Sports Festival for Women (Group-IV)-2006 | | Women sports festival concludes | |
JAMMU | DEC 5 Women National Sports Festival concluded here with impressive and colourful closing ceremony under 32nd National Sports Festival for Women in the disciplines of Volleyball, Kho-Kho and Kabaddi at Indoor Complex, M.A. Stadium today. West Bengal won the overall trophy in Volleyball and Kho-Kho while Delhi remained champion in Kabaddi. In volleyball event, W.B. defeated the defending champions Uttar Pradesh while in Kho-Kho, W.B. won the final by defeating Haryana. In Kabaddi, Delhi defeated Karnatka. About eight hundreds players from various states and upon territories across the country participated in the mega event. This was the second time that City of Temples hosting such mega women sports festival. Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chief Minister was the chief guest at the concluding ceremony declared the festival concluded and distributed the prizes to the winners and runners up. While speaking on the occasion he congratulated the participants of the tournament and underlined the importance of extra-curricular activities and excelling in games along with carrying forward academic goals. He said that participating in big event is itself an award for the participants as these events not only provide opportunity to work in team spirit and test ones qualities to withstand pressure on the field. He further said that apart from promoting sports such festivals serve as launching pad for solidarity, friendship and brotherhood. The CM lauded the efforts made by the organizers for smooth and successful conduct of the festival. Babu Singh, Hon;ble Minister for Youth Services and Sports in his address stressing upon women empowerment in the present era as women competing neck to neck to men in every sphere of life. Earlier, welcome address was presented by A.K. Angurana, Principal Secretary, Higher/Technical Education and Youth Services and Sports said that these festivals inculcate sportsman spirit and sense of aesthetics in the budding youth. Later on, Ravinder Gupta, Secretary, J&K State Sports council presented the vote of thanks. Prominent among others presented on the occasion were Ramesh Chander Sharma, MOS for Public Health Enigneering, Sudhir, Asstt. Dorector SAI, N.D. Wani, Director Colleges, Sheikh Fazal Ahmed, Abdul Rauf, Sidharth Sharma, G.M. Dar, Madan Lal, S.A.Wani besides members of the J&K State Sports Council and officials of Dept. of Youth Services and Sports. The Results of Today’s matches: Volleyball Quarterfinals U.P. beat Tamil Nadu by 2-0 having sets score 25-19 and 25-23, Mizoram beat Chandigarh by 2-0 having set score margin of 25-19 and 25-23, Gujarat beat Karnatka by 2-1 with final scores 25-20, 20-25 and 25-22. West Bengal beat Punjab by 2-0 having set score 25-13 and 25-19. Semi-Finals U.P. beat Mizoram by 2-0 with set score fo 25-23 and 27-25, West Bengal beat Gujarat by 2-0 having set score 25-17 and 25-08. Final West Bengal beat U.P. by 2-1 having set score 25-22, 15-25 and 25-18. KHO-KHO Quaterfinals West Bengal beat A.P., Punjab beat M.P, Assam beat Maharashtra while Haryana beat Kerala Semi-Finals West Bengal beat Punjab and Haryana beat Kerala Final West Bengal beat Haryana Kabaddi Semi-Finals Delhi beat Punjab and Karnatka beat H.P. Final Delhi beat Karnataka by score of 34-22 as Pooja from Delhi remained best performer for her team.
