Jammu for a credible, responsive leadership | Trust Deficit | | Neha JAMMU, Sept 23: The Jammu province is passing through difficult times. There is widespread discontent and disaffection among its people. They are feeling abandoned and their sense of despondency has become a cause of concern. There is every possibility that the desperate people may lose its faith in the methodology they have used thus far to air their grievances and seek a permanent solution to their age-old problem which has been further compounded by the authorities in New Delhi by adopting a discriminatory attitude towards them. They are fed up with the existing politico-constitutional set-up because they feel, and rightly so, that it is Kashmir-centric and not state-centric and that the successive governments in the state have always been solely guided by the interests of a particular section of Kashmiri society and Kashmir's concerns and needs, real or imaginary. And, their accusation is that it is because of the preferential treatment meted out to Kashmir and a section of Kashmiri society that a situation has arisen that has, in turn, resulted in humiliating, invidious and unjust distinctions between them and the particular section of Kashmiri society, notwithstanding the fact that all belong to the state. They have come to believe that their plight would remain the same, rather become more pathetic, in case the existing system remains unchanged and New Delhi continues to ignore them and goes on focusing on Kashmir where the political class has mastered the art of blackmailing and browbeating it to extract concession after concession, including special financial packages for the development of Kashmir and employment packages, the latest being the Rs 1000-crore training-cum-placement package for "keeping the Kashmiri youth away from separatism". They are not just accusing New Delhi. They are also accusing their own leadership of leaving them in the lurch for reasons best known to them. The trust deficit between them and their representatives in the assembly has become so palpable that it can be noticed anytime and anywhere in the region. The radicals among them are even accusing their leaders of "bartering their interests and self-respect for some petty personal gains". The gulf between them and their leaders got further widened when on April 13 this year the bulk of the BJP and the Panthers Party MLAs, plus the one belonging to the Jammu State Morcha, voted for the Kashmir-centric parties -- the Congress, the NC and the PDP -- during the legislative council elections. This development shattered their whole faith in these parties with the people of the province emphasizing the need for an alternative that is credible, responsive and public-spirited. The Jammu's political class is aware of the people's attitude towards it, but, unfortunately, it is not doing anything worthwhile to remove the trust deficit between them. It is simply issuing press releases and paying just lip service. This approach on the part of the leadership would not do. Rather, it would further widen the already rather wide gulf between the two. Hence, the Jammu's political class has to rise to the occasion and take the first initiative. A sincere initiative on their part can change the situation in the province, which has been sitting on a volcano of discontent since decades and which will surely explode if the situations continues to remain the same for some more time. A sincere initiative on the part of the Jammu's leadership has already become overdue and, hence, to mark time would be to invite greater trouble. |
