MHA, Telcos discuss solution for real-time monitoring of VoIP | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Sept 24: The joint secretary (Kashmir) in Union Home Ministry, K Sakandan Saturday chaired a high-level meeting of state and central officials with telecom operators where the latter were asked to ensure that communications taking place over their networks either through Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or on social networking sites should be available for monitoring by the security agencies, sources told KNS. They said Sakandan immediately after his arrival from New Delhi chaired the meeting at Police Headquarter here which was also attended by DGP Kuldeep Khoda and ADGP Law and Order, K Rajandra Kumar. “In the marathon 3-hour meeting which stated at 2:30 pm and ended at 5:30, the state and central officials expressed their concern over monitoring of social networking sites and voice chat facilities on real-time basis,” sources told KNS. The operators and the officials, they said, discussed a solution for a real-time monitoring of the VoIP and other services available on Internet, during the meeting. “Sakandan also asked the cellular operators to devise a fool proof verification mechanism before issuing SIM cards. He (Sakandan) asked the operators that no new SIM card should be issued before the proper and stringent verification,” sources told KNS. Off late, sources said, security agencies have expressed concerns over lack of real time monitoring of communication exchanges taking place on Internet and that telecom operators were not providing them real time data of these conversations which is a risk.
