Afzal Guru Clemency resolution; stormy session expected | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Sept 24: The summer session of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly scheduled to begin from Monday is expected to be stormy as opposition Peoples Democratic Party and BJP have taken contrast positions on the clemency resolution of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru while ruling National Conference and Congress coalition are yet to decide about their strategy. PDP has already announced support to the clemency resolution to be tabled in the Assembly on September 28 while BJP has categorically stated that it will oppose any such move. The ruling NC and Congress combine is yet to decide its stand on the resolution. State Congress President and MP, Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz Saturday said that only party legislator have the power to decide whether to vote on the resolution or not. “President has no authority on such issues as it is party legislators which have to decide it,” Prof Soz told KNS when asked whether Congress will support the resolution or not. The NC is scheduled to call party legislature meet in a day or two where they will decide the party stand on the resolution. The move to pass an assembly resolution along the lines of the one in Tamil Nadu for Rajiv Ghandi’s killers began after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s tweet on August 31. “If J&K Assembly had passed a resolution similar to the Tamil Nadu one for Afzal Guru, would the reaction have been as muted? I think not,” Omar wrote on Twitter. Following this, independent MLA from Lagate constituency of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Engineer Rashid filed a resolution and the speaker, Mohammad Akbar Lone, listed the resolution for discussion, debate and voting on September 28.
