HEALTHCARE SERVICES SHOULD BE AFFORDED TO ALL | | KHUSHWANT S RANIAL | 9/24/2011 9:40:42 PM |
| The healthy mind resides in the healthy body is an aged old adage. It is a reflection of the confidence level to face the storms of the hardships. The sound health is a positive indicator of a sound society and healthy nation. The nation having its citizens in the malnourished state and weak in the health cannot hope to provide justice to any of assigned work in professional as well as in the daily routine life. The growth and development of the nation cannot be speedily met as desired despite laying formidable structural planning. If we compare the physical health structure of the European as well as of the people of the developed nations of the world around us with our own citizens, we cannot claim to have better results to feel confident enough to boast of. No doubt climatic conditions, clean atmosphere, standard of living, sanitation drives, work culture, dietary habits, unadulterated eatables and above all proper diagnosis followed by congenial treatment leaves an undeniable difference in comparison to ours. But all such facilities do contribute to major extent in the improvement in field of health sector. So our plight due to existing poor conditions are quite dismal and need to be highlighted for seeking the improvement to lessen the woes of those who particularly fail to get even the proper diagnosis not to speak of the treatment. The biggest issue which has led to such a pitiable plight of the hapless citizen is the lack of knowledge, ill social awareness, illiteracy, aged old prevalent prejudices, gender discrimination inaccessibility to the healthcare centres, non availability of medicines and inadequate senior consultants and physicians in the remote part of our country. In addition, owing to lack of proper infrastructure at the far flung areas, aged old methodology of treating the severe diseases and over banking on the ayurvedic medicinal treatment has led to the disaster. Without casting doubt upon the utility of ayurvedic system of treatment, what compels to emphasise for over reliance on the newer mode of treatment is due to advent of scientific advancement in the field of medicine and surgery to which we do not seek the access and remain prone to limited thoughts and options. Another setback to the Indian patients is the over burgeoning population which need huge amount of the infrastructure to cover the needs of the people but sadly due to certain lackadaisical policy matters , the doctor do not prefer to stay in the semi urban and rural areas .They prefer to stay in the big cities whereas the patients find too hard to visit to big cities to get the treatment .Further what desist the patient to visit the metropolitan cities and other big cities where there are possibilities of the exploring newer heights in the field of medicine is the inflationary trend .A poor person cannot afford to stay in big cities owing to multiple reasons including the high cost of food , shelter and transportation . Most of the time patients report to the doctors when the ailment has aggravated to the state of no return to normalcy or curable position. Under such a state, the doctors go for customary formalities except to console the kith and kin of the patients to overcome the grief and likely loss occurred to the patient through sheer wastage of the amount, time and space. They too expect some wonderful miracle to come and rescue the ailed patient from the cruel clutches of death in addition to their ability and attempt to save the patient. The rampant growth of the private healthcare services in the recent years have no doubt proved as a boon for the provision of adequate health care services to the needy ones but again the mode of earning the profit has relegated the real cause back to the walls .They instead of redressing the genuine patients have set up fleecing houses by taking an undue advantage of the patient’s helplessness and putting the common citizen to the mercy of God. There is urgent requirement of the adaptability at all levels. Health care providers must hold a humanistic touch and lend invaluable services without acknowledging much profiteering interest. The World Health Organization has claimed that only 30 to 35% of the total Indian Populace is able to get the due medical coverage of substantial standard and essential drugs for the common disease and more than a million die for the want of adequate medical facilities, most of them being women and children below 5 years. The general notion of our successive government’s has remained that cost of medical treatment is very costly so if the cost of medicines are placed under check that would suffice the purpose but this is wrong notion because in such a way by compromising with the quality of medicine ,we are doing un fair amount of justice with the patients. Apart such an endeavours places a check on the research mode, which is essential for up gradation and replacement of old worn modes by the newer ones. The capability of a nation to sustain its economic growth increase the standard of living, improved health and surrounding social milieu all rests on the growth and development of new products, processes and services .We still lag behind in the development of drugs formation and depends on the foreign products which leads to exceedingly high costs of drug purchase beyond the reach of the common person. Moreover a drug has to pass through different phases to stand the competition of the market and value of its products. Generally it is a long clinical trial which spans over decades for the final nod for launching which does not give encouragement to the local pharmaceuticals companies to take the risk of initiative to develop new medicines and so rather they prefer to produce medicines by minor alternation in the salt products of already launched medicines. In gist there is dire need of a comprehensive concerting effort of all the stake holders right from the diagnosis to treatment, pharmaceuticals companies, governmental machinery and the private clinical operators to take into account the economic plight of the common poor people and if possible the insurance/ banking sectors must also come forward to open new vistas for making arrangements for the health insurances of the poor people like the offers made for the housing, and automobiles purchase to cover the unforeseen events to make the patient real beneficiaries.
