Celebration of NSS Day at MIER college of education

Jammu, Sept 24: College of Education celebrated NSS day by organizing a visit to Rotary Innerwheel Home for mentally retarded children, Channi Rama , Jammu.
About fifty five NSS volunteers from all the wings of MIER college including students of B. Ed, B. Ed Special Education (MR) and M. Ed. visited the home for retarded children.
Aseem Tandon, president , Rotary Innerwheel Club addressed the volunteers and said that the mentally retarded children are a part of our society and need to be assimilated in the social fabric so that they do not get alienated. G L Koul, principal of the school acquainted the volunteers with the inmates of the school and their specific disabilities. The volunteers were accompanied by Vinod Kalra, NSS programme officer and Rohinika Sharma, lecturer B. Ed special education wing MIER.
The visit was an eye opener for the students who pledged to serve this section of the society through the NSS programme.
Earlier, an awareness lecture on special education was conducted in the college premises. The resource person was Rohinika Sharma. She informed the audience about various categories of children with special needs and also different types of special schools. She also highlighted the concept of inclusive education.
Speaking on the occasion Adit Gupta, Joint Director MIER said that this is an appreciable initiative taken up by the NSS unit of MIER college as the special children are generally a neglected section of the society, looked at with derision because of the superstitions and misconceptions prevalent among people.
They need to be brought under the social umbrella.
Arun Gupta, chairman MIER Group of Institutions and Renu Gupta, director MIER blessed the NSS volunteers and appreciated the efforts of the unit which always commemorates all the important days with great zeal.
