RSS, BJP and the neglected people of Jammu province | Indifferent Attitude | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 24: The RSS yesterday organized an interaction between its chief Dr Mohan Rao Bhagwat and a selected gathering of people at Jammu Club, Jammu. Bhagwat explained the circumstances leading to the establishment of this organization in 1925 and educated the gathering about what the RSS stands for. He restated that the RSS stands for a strong, stable and vibrant India; national unity and communal amity. Besides, he told the gathering that the RSS despise and reject out-of-hand all those who stand for pre-1953 position for Jammu and Kashmir; those who are describing Kashmir as a unique problem and demanding a unique solution to it; those who are saying India and Pakistan have a shared destiny; those who are suggesting non-territorial solution; those who are advocating the concept of shared sovereignty between India and Pakistan in the Indian Jammu and Kashmir; and those whose concept of the nation and on the nation is flawed and not based on the parameters of the institutions of the state and the nation. He was quite candid in this regard and exhorted the gathering to remain watchful so that the evil designs of the regressive and negative forces are comprehensively defeated. Everyone would share his views, notwithstanding the fact that he did not reflect on what the RSS is contemplating to surmount the serious challenges the nation has been facing since years. It would have been better had he reflected on this aspect and reassured the concerned citizens that if need be the RSS can on its own can take on and defeat the regressive forces and the enemies of the nation. He should have informed the gathering that a strategy is already in place to avert any eventuality, of courser, without disclosing it. Strategies cannot be discussed in public domain. One can only hope that he would do the needful. However, what he said on the issues of reorganization of the state and empowerment of Jammu and Ladakh and the political future of the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus was not really inspiring. In fact, he had nothing in his political kitty to offer anything to the suffering people of Jammu and Ladakh and the Kashmiri Hindus who have become refugees in their own mother land. Actually, he was responding to queries in this regard. He didn't suggest any tangible solution to the age-old problem of Jammu. Nor did he say anything concrete as far as the demand in Ladakh for Union Territory status is concerned. Besides, nor did he suggest any solution that could mitigate the hardships of the displaced Kashmiri Hindus on a permanent. His responses were as vague as they were disappointing. He linked the issue of Jammu's empowerment or the demand for separate Jammu state to the national interest. It was a complete U-turn, but it was expected because the RSS, which had at Kurukshetra in 2002 on the eve of the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir adopted a resolution demanding statehood for Jammu and Union Territory for Ladakh and founded Jammu State Morcha to accomplish the stated goal, had disbanded the same in 2008 on the eve of the assembly elections in the state, thus indicating that it was not really committee to what it adopted with much fanfare some ten years ago. The RSS had buckled under the BJP's unholy pressure. Remember, LK Advani, Arun Jaitley and others of their ilk are rabidly opposed to the idea of Jammu province becoming a full-fledged state. That the RSS could not hold its own was an indication that it was under the bad influence of those in the BJP who, like the Congress and other formations, do not consider the people of Jammu province as relevant as the other Indians are and for wrong reasons, the most important being their concern for the reasonable and unreasonable aspirations of the followers of a particular religion in Kashmir. If the attitude of the RSS chief to the demand in Jammu for statehood was not really positive, his attitude towards Ladakh and displaced Kashmiri Hindus was no different. His only suggestion was: There should be no discrimination between man and man on any ground whatsoever and there should be no discrimination between the regions and that's all. The RSS needs to review its stand on the persecuted and willfully ignored Jammu, Ladakh, displaced Kashmiri Hindus and refugees from West Pakistan, Pakistan-occupied-Jammu and Kashmir and border migrants of 1965 and 1971. For, they constitute the most stable segment of the nationalist constituency in the country. They are not only fighting for their empowerment but also fighting splendidly for the national cause and suffering untold miseries and losses in the process. The RSS should remember that if the nation is to win the ideological war, it has no other option but empower the nationalist segment in the state. It was no wonder when in 2008 a leading commentator told the nation, "To save India, follow Jammu". Will the RSS ape what the commentator said in the wake of the historical Amarnath land movement in Jammu, described by many as the "mother of all movements in the world". |
