KU to fill up vacant faculty posts soon: Prof Talat Advocates for academic reforms, research work | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Sept 25 : Vice-Chancellor Kashmir University Prof Talat Ahmad Sunday said that all vacancies of lecturers in the Varsity would be filled up soon and latest job oriented courses would be introduced in KU. In an exclusive interview with KNS, Prof Talat said, “During its recent visit the NAAC team raised the issue of vacant faculty positions in the KU with us. There are almost one third teaching posts lying vacant in the KU. Soon we are going to advertise the posts and fill up these within shortest possible time.” He said that latest job oriented PG courses including Hotel Management and Tourism would be introduced in the KU soon. “Also there will be registration open for research courses like M Phil and P Hd after every four months. This way no student will have to wait for registration for long,” he added. Prof Talat told KNS that his focus is to motivate faculty members towards researches in their respective fields. “They have to switch over to research mood now and bring research projects to the University. We will also encourage college teachers to utilize our labs for researches,” he said. Asked to comment about the bungling which happened in his predecessor Riyaz Punjabi’s tenure, the VC said, “There are lots of things which need to be enquired. But there are lots of other urgent issues which need to be focused on.” Asked whether any enquiry would be initiated in the backdoor recruitments which happened in Punjabi’s tenure, Prof Talat told KNS “If he (Punjabi) has done something good, it is good. But if he has done something wrong, it will be wrong on my part to rectify that. Whatever has happened has happened. We won’t allow such things to be repeated.” “Since I took over, I’ve made everybody understand the importance of time. Every employee of the KU has to be available from 10 am to 4 pm in the campus. I have ordered that no file should remain pending for more than two days,” he vowed. The VC told KNS the KU would sign MoU with Delhi University and will do partnership with other universities also so that the students are benefited. “We will focus on a strong placement cell in the University so that students will be placed during on campus placement drives,” Prof Talat told KNS. The VC also declared that there was strong need for academic reforms. “We are looking at several possibilities for reforms. Feasibility of single paper system during the exams is being discussed with the higher education ministry,” he added. On the issue that KU was awarding lesser percentage of marks to its students compared to outside state universities which hampers their chances of getting jobs, Prof Talat said, “Soon there will be written test for all kinds of jobs and percentage won’t matter much now.”
