Urgent tasks await Rahul Gandhi in Srinagar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sep 25:When the AICC General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi, lands in Srinagar on Monday he will have to initiate steps in three directions in the interest of the survival of the ruling coalition and in the interest of the unity in the state unit of the Congress. The state unit of the Congress has been plagued by growing conflict bet ween the dissidents, led by union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and the loyalists, headed by the PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz during the last three years. Since the AICC played a passive role the problem of dissensions in the congress complicated the problem i n the organisation. It is expected that Rahul may initiate some steps that could bring about reconciliation between the two groups. The most important task awaiting Rahul in Srinagar is the growing trust deficit between the congress and the National Conference. A senior congress leader said "yes the wedge between the NC and the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir is widening because of the domineering role being adopted by the former. "He said "we will try to persuade Rahul Gandhi to intervene so that the NC leadership does not take the Congress for granted." He said that since Rahul Gandhi has been in favour of allowing the present political arrangement to continue for another three years he needs to ensure that the Congress was not forced to play a second fiddle to the NC. Reports said that Rahul Gandhi may help the Congress and the NC in evolving a strategy that could help the ruling coalition to face a ticklish sit uation that may rise in case the private members resolution on clemency to Afzal Guru was tabled in the Assembly. While the Congress is in favour of postponing the tabling of the resolution its partner, the NC, is dead set to vote in favour of the resolution failing which it may allow the PDP, its main political rival, to draw the mileage. Congress leaders say that the task before Rahul Gandhi is quite cumbersome but in case he succeeded in tackling these three issues the ruling coalition may be able to face the opposition barbs.
