| Army facing shortage of Lt Colonels | | | New Delhi Dec 6 Amidst growing number of suicide cases, the Army is facing shortage in the ranks of Lieutenant Colonels and below in the officer's cadre, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. "The main reason for shortage in the Army is non-availability of sufficient number of suitable candidates meeting the Army's laid-down criteria for selection," Defence Minister A.K. Antony said in a reply. However, constant efforts are made to make the Army an attractive career, he added. "Officers, including officers in the short service commission (SSC) are now eligible to hold Captain, Major and Lieutenant Colonel ranks after two, six and 13 years of reckonable service respectively," the Minister said. Sustained image projection through print and electronic media is also launched, he added. Army Killings: There has been a rise in killing of colleagues in the Army over the past two years. The Army reported nine such incidents in 2004, 13 in 2005 and 23 until last month of this year, the Minister said in another reply. Arguments between colleagues and perceived grievances or harassment by seniors are believed to some of the main causes of such attacks. Most of such cases have occurred in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast. Liberalised leave policy to attend to domestic issues and increased formal and informal interaction between senior and junior officers are among the steps that have been taken to prevent such incidents, Antony said. |
