Dalip Singh luring university teachers, Saraf still ahead | JUTA President Elections | | Mishu Gupta JAMMU, Sept 25: With d-day approaching, campaign for election of President of Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA) has intensified with contesting candidates making knee deep efforts to woo voters. If sources within University are to be believed, incumbent president Dilip Singh of Mathematics Department has made the election prestige issue. They claimed that Singh has been working overnight like a professional politician to win over the faculty members to vote in his favour on September 27. Sources said that Singh has no stone unturned in attracting the voters across the entire university campus. On the contrary, sources said that Prof Neelam Saraf, head of the department of Hindi, is leading the race for the post of President, as she is the only lady contesting for the top post. Her two competitors are the incumbent president Dilip Singh of Mathematics Department and Prof. Rajinder Gupta of Computer Sciences. Dilip Singh is the present incumbent. Saraf, however, has promised to project all the issues confronting the teachers of the university which have been left untouched in the while her competitors are projecting their own agendas. Enhancement of the retirement age to 62 years from 60 years, payment of sixth pay commission, tussle between teaching community and supporting staff (administration) and construction of parking slots are the main issues which will decide the fate of candidates contesting for the president's post. As many as 267 teachers, who are the eligible members of JUTA, will exercise their right to franchise in the upcoming elections. Sources said these elections have assumed significance due to the formation of Jammu University Council---the supreme executive body of University vested with all administrative and academic powers. Four candidates Dr. Kavita Suri of Lifelong Learning department, Prof. Lalit Sen of Computer Sciences department, Prof. Jaspal Singh of Directorate of Distance Education and Prof. Madhulikha Bhagat of Bio-Technology have already been elected unopposed for posts of vice-president, general secretary, joint secretary and treasurer respectively. Head of Law department, Jammu University Prof V.P.Magotra will be the election commissioner. A professor on the condition of anonymity said that contest is between Dr. Dalip Singh and Dr. Neelam Saraf. Another professor said that a particular candidate of the three is contesting the election just to gain popularity in campus. He said "whosoever wins, post, one thing is for sure that the teachers are very excited abut the upcoming elections. Dr. Neelam Saraf surely has an edge over the other contestants but it would be clear only on the day of election, who would stand where." |
