Why are separatists silent over Guru Resolution? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 25: At a time when Afzal Guru's clemency resolution is being widely discussed across the country, the total indifference of the separatists towards the issue has surprised the people. The resolution moved by an independent MLA Langat, Engineer Abdul Rashid is likely to come up for discussion on September 27. The Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) has decided to vote in favour of the resolution. The Congress MLAs will oppose the resolution and so will BJP and Panthers Party. Saif-ud-Din Soz who heads the Pradesh Congress Committee of the state has said that his party will not shy away from voting. He, however, remained silent on supporting or opposing the resolution. The National Conference, according to reports, is likely to create a situation where the house is forced to defer discussion on the resolution. The Congress, reports said, will also exercise caution to save the coalition government. Pakistan foreign Minister, Hina Rabbani Khar also made a mention of Afzal Guru in one of her recent speeches in America. The former Pakistan Administered Kashmir Prime Minister, Barrister Sultan said Afzal hanging would lead to trouble and hamper the on-going Indo-Pak peace process. An issue that is being discussed internationally and which has the potential of breaking the National Conference-Congress coalition is being ignored by the separatists. Kashmir watchers have expressed surprise. Surprisingly no leader from the separatist camp is ready to speak on the issue. A second line Hurriyat leader preferring anonymity said Afzal worked for the state's `notorious' Special Operations Group (SOG) and as such does not deserve the attentio0n from the separatist camp. But there seem other reasons for the `meaningful' silence of the separatist camp. The Wikileaks disclosures have pushed most of the Hurriyat leaders to the wall. According to the website some Hurriyat leaders recommended death sentence for Afzal Guru. The disclosures created a stir in Kashmir and the Hurriyat leaders were forced to explain their position. Any ways, whatever the reasons, the separatist camp has so far ignored the issue. How they react after the resolution is actually discussed in the Legislative Assembly remains to be seen. |
