| 7 pesticide factories violating PCB norms closed | | | Kathua | Dec 6 Seven factories situated in Samba Industrial estate have been asked to stop production of pesticides following a protest by farmers of the area who complained about the ill effects of the poisonous by these factories on their standing crop. Farmers of the Tanda, Sapwal, Pandoo and Raipura held a protest demonstration in front of SDM office Samba demanding closure of factories manufacturing pesticide inside Samba-SIDCO Industrial Complex. According to them the pesticide 24-D being produced in these factories emits a gas which is damaging the standing crops in the area. The said the gas released during the production of the said pesticide mixes with the air and the dew drops containing the contents of the gas spoils every crop in the area. Farmers were demanding immediate closure of the factories. They also presented a memorandum to the SDM Samba in this regard. Sources disclosed that a team comprising five head of departments today visited the area and after investigating about the complaints lodged by farmers. The action came in sequel to protest by farmers demanding closure of pesticide factories in the area. The team of official, according to sources, picked up samples from the area and after investigation established the ill effects of the gases emitted by the factories during the production of pesticides. Sources said that the effects on crops were due to violation of Pollution Control Board norms by seven factories located in the area after which the visiting team issue on the spot directions to the owners to stop the production till further orders. These factories are Hindustan Polymers, Krishi Refine, Sudershan Chemicals, UPL Crop Chemicals, Pioneer Chemicals and Shivalik Chemicals.
