Official apathy impairs functioning of Cooperative Public Schools | | | EARLY TIMES report Jammu, Sep 26: Failure of the administration to conduct elections for governing body of Cooperative Public Schools has raised a serious question mark over its commitment to ensure transparent, vibrant and effective educational system in these institutions. Sources said the official apathy has impaired the functioning of these schools and students in Cooperative Public Schools in the region are the latest victim of it. “There had been no computer teacher in Deelli branch of the school for the last five months and the school management even charged computer fee from the students. Similarly, teachers in Sanjay Nagar branch have not been paid for the last eight months. Many senior and competitive teachers have already resigned from their jobs while others were forcefully terminated,” sources added. They maintained there has been drastic fall in students’ enrollment as compared to corresponding last year but the administration seems to be least bothered about the miseries of parents and their wards. “Even the parents have decided to not pay the computer fee as there was no computer teacher in the school. There is also the shortage of teachers in Maths, English and other subjects. The administration should either conduct elections for governing body or take corrective measures to streamline the functioning of the school,” a faculty member of the school said requesting anonymity. On September 28 last, the government had ordered an inquiry into the alleged mal functioning of the Board of Directors, leading to several irregularities in the affairs of the Cooperative Public Schools in the region. The probe was ordered on the directions of the Minister of State (Ind Charge) for Cooperatives Manohar Lal Sharma. There are five branches of Cooperative Public Schools in Jammu city. The Minister taking serious note of the issue had directed the Registrar Cooperative Societies (J&K), M Abbas to initiate an inquiry into the matter and submit report within a week. The Registrar had constituted two-member inquiry committee to probe into the allegations and state of affairs in the Cooperative schools. Joint Registrar, Cooperative Societies (Spl), Jammu and Deputy Registrar (Agri) Cooperative Societies, Jammu were appointed as members of the Committee. “The inquiry report had not been made public so far. The students and the staff continue to bear the brunt of the official apathy,” the faculty member added. When contacted, the Registrar was not available for comments as his cell phone was out of reach. It may be mentioned here that as per the previous arrangement, there was a nine-member governing body including a president, a secretary and 7 Board of Directors to look after the functioning of the Cooperative Public Schools in the region.
