Strained US-Pak ties may affect security scenario in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Sept 26: Security experts are of the opinion that deteriorating relations between Islamabad and Washington was likely to have its immediate adverse impact on the level of terrorist activities within Pakistan and across its borders in Jammu and Kashmir. Experts from the Army, the paramilitary forces and the state police believe that worsening relations between Washington and Islamabad can be a double edged weapon. On one hand the US may r educe the military aid to Pakistan which it was utilizing for abetting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, on the other hand it will increase Islamabad's dependence on military and economic aid from China, India's main enemy. They said that during the last three years Washington had mounted pressure on Islamabad for curtailing its support to crossbred terrorism. They said if there was slight improvement in the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir during the last three years it has been the result of US influence on the establishment in Pakistan. These experts fear that once Islamabad is out of Washington's patronage agencies in Pakistan, including the Army and the ISI, may renew their efforts for boosting militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. They said that the first sign of strains in the US-Pak relations surfaced when the Pakistan Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, asked the Foreign Minister, Hina Rabbani Khar, to cut short her visit to New York which itself indicated that Islamabad was not prepared to accept dictation from Washington. Official sources in Jammu said that following the growing conflict between Islamabad and Washington troops, deployed on the LOC, have been asked to intensify patrolling on the border in order to check infiltration of militants for which various agencies across the border were framing strategies. Troops have been told to inform their field commanders in case they needed additional companions of soldiers and some gadgets for monitoring the movement of the militants across the LOC
