Vohra inaugurates J&K philatelic exhibition | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 26: Governor N.N.Vohra inaugurated four day Jammu and Kashmir State Level Philatelic Exhibition and Post Office Festival, “Chinar-2011”, organized by Jammu and Kashmir Postal Circle at SKICC here today. Governor, who was Chief Guest at the function, observed that Stamps have been an important source for learning about the geography, history, culture, national personalities and other important aspects of any country. He added that Stamps, since they first came into use, about 150 years ago, have acquired an important role, all over the world. He said that if we were to put in chronological order all the stamps issued in India for the past over a century, they would provide an exciting glimpse into our history. Governor said that despite the advent of electronic communication systems like Internet, video-conferencing and the role of the postal services continue to remain important, at least in all the developing countries. Governor suggested to the Chief Post Master General J&K, John Samuel, to consider taking all necessary measures to significantly improving the mail delivery and other postal services in the State, particularly in the remote areas, for the larger benefit of the common people. In this context he felt that the Postal Department should launch a publicity drive to educate the people to write the Pin Code on every letter put into the Mail Box, as this would facilitate quick delivery of mail. Governor released a Special Cover on “Chinar 2011” and launched the first ever “My Stamp” in the country by which the people will get personalized stamps with their photographs on it. Governor congratulated John Samuel and the officers of his Circle for organizing such a large Philatelic Exhibition, displaying nearly 1, 00,000 Stamps and First Day Covers. He also lauded Samuel for organizing several programmes for the School children to participate in the Exhibition. Governor went around the Exhibition and evinced keen interest in the older stamps and covers. Earlier, the Governor lit the ceremonial lamp to mark the commencement of the exhibition. Governor was honoured on this occasion, with John Samuel, Chief Postmaster General, J&K Circle, presenting to him a wooden model of the floating Post Office in the Dal Lake. Samuel dwelt on the improvements recently brought about in the functioning of the Department of Posts in the State and the new initiatives which are being particularly taken to improve the delivery system to ensure against delays. He gave details of the 4-day Philatelic Exhibition being organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Postal Circle in Srinagar after 32 years.
