We want change of guard: Sarpanches convey to Rahul | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 26: By sharing their viewpoint on the future of Congress party in the state of Jammu and Kashmir a long list of panches and sarpanches, who were present at SKICC to attend a meeting with AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, on Monday has once again brought the issue of change of leadership to the centre stage. According to sources, who attended the session at SKICC, the panches and sarpanches told Rahul Gandhi that the Congress party should take a dig at the post of Chief Minister at the end of completion of three year rule of National Conference leader Omar Abdullah. "We want change of guard at the helm as our own alliance partner is working against us and consolidating its position at the cost of neglecting us," sarpanches told Rahul in clear terms. Sources said, while the panches made this observation, Rahul Gandhi listened to them patiently and gave no direct response. It may be mentioned that the a section of state unit of the congress party has been vociferously demanding change of guard at the helm to set its own house in order. The congress party is wary of losing its committed vote bank in Jammu region as it has been pushed to the corner by the alliance partner over a period of time. The alliance partners do not see eye to eye on variety of issues. Coupled with the aggressive posturing of the NAtional conference and its Kashmir centric agenda is making it difficult for the congress party leaders to defend them. Omar Abdullahs stand over the issue of Mohd Afzal Guru has further pushed the congress party on the backfoot. The party leaders had difference of opinion on the conduct of Panchayat polls and ever since the poll process was completed an effort has been made to take credit for the conduct of the peaceful polls by one and all, leading to more differences. On one hand Chief Minister made it a point t visit almost all the regions of the state and addressed series of meetings of elected panches and sarpanches claiming credit for the Panchayat polls. The congress party, though a bit late, too has now decided to position its popular young leader among the newly elected panches and sarpanches to drive home the point that the congress party is strengthening its roots across the state.
