Gupta calls JUTA dead, defunct body; Saraf banking on faculty support
Elections today
9/27/2011 12:27:52 AM
Mishu Gupta
JAMMU, Sept 26: Election for President of Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA) has virtually been turned into battle with candidates resorting to tactics contrary to what is expected of academicians.
If incumbent president Dilip Singh of Mathematics Department has made JUTA election prestige issue, another contesting candidate Prof. Rajinder Gupta of Economics Department, exactly a day before election, addressed a hurriedly called press conference wherein he labeled JUTA a 'dead and defunct' union. Stating that he would democratize this high profile association of university teachers, Gupta obliquely claimed that existing JUTA body is undemocratic where teachers are snubbed and ignored if they raise issues.
He did not stop here and went on to raise questions on the claims being made by other two contesting candidates. Referring to incumbent president Dilip Singh, Gupta said that he has remained president for two years and is yearning for another term. While Gupta was soft on Singh, he preferred launching scathing attack on the personnel life of his ace rival and potential winner Prof. Neelam Saraf.
Virtually talking in the tone of a professional politician, academician Prof. Rajinder Gupta called Saraf a rich lady and said "She is Director Academic Staff College and hence, part of the administration. She would not able to do justice with the post of president of JUTA." Gupta raised this issue despite the fact that Head of Law department, Jammu University Prof V.P. Magotra who is the election commissioner has already given detailed clarification over the issue.
Sources said that Gupta organized press conference in order to impact prospects of Saraf who is ahead so far in the race for the presidentship of JUTA. They added that while both Gupta and Singh have been resorting to political stunts to win over voters, Saraf has campaigned like a true academician and preferred not to talk about the personnel or professional life of her two rivals.
Saraf, however, has promised to project all the issues confronting the teachers of the university which have been left untouched in the while her competitors are projecting their own agendas. Enhancement of the retirement age to 62 years from 60 years, payment of sixth pay commission, tussle between teaching community and supporting staff (administration) and construction of parking slots are the main issues which will decide the fate of candidates contesting for the president's post.
Sources disclosed that 267 teachers, who are the eligible members of JUTA, will exercise their right to franchise in the upcoming elections. Sources said these elections have assumed significance due to the formation of Jammu University Council---the supreme executive body of University vested with all administrative and academic powers.
Four candidates Dr. Kavita Suri of Lifelong Learning department, Prof. Lalit Sen of Computer Sciences department, Prof. Jaspal Singh of Directorate of Distance Education and Prof. Madhulikha Bhagat of Bio-Technology have already been elected unopposed for posts of vice-president, general secretary, joint secretary and treasurer respectively.
Head of Law department, Jammu University Prof V.P. Magotra will be the election commissioner.
