Coalition-a necessary evil | | YUDHVIR SETHI | 9/27/2011 8:40:04 PM |
| Our country, India is the largest democracy in the world. Among 193 countries of the world, India stands at number two after China as far as the population is concerned. It has a large number of political parties, both at national and regional levels. In our democratic set up, these political parties take part in electoral processes of the country on their respective manifestos which are being publicised and circulated among the electorates describing party’s promises, ideology and agenda. India got freedom in 1947 and after attaining this goal, the country was ruled for more than two decades by a single political party, the Indian National Congress. In late 70s, a change was witnessed and an era of coalition dharma started. In coalition, more than one party come together, work out some understanding and form the government. With the passage of time, the definition of coalition has changed and it is now assumed that undue favours and benefits are being sought by the leaders of the parties in coalition. Pressure is built even at the time of allotment of ministerial portfolios to get important ministries. The Prime Minister at the centre or the Chief Minister in a state even sometimes succumbs to the pressure and please the coalition partners by ignoring the qualification, personal social reputation ,temperament and criminal records. This practice gives strength to politics of blackmail. It is not necessary that every political party in a coalition is after accumulation of wealth by indulging in corrupt practices. But sometimes, it becomes a compulsion for them to adopt a silence approach in order to keep the coalition running, which is indeed unfortunate for the nation and the people. If we talk of the present UPA coalition government at New Delhi and the coalition of the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir, the NC is a partner of UPA in Union government, it is sharing power with Congress here. It has been observed that the Kashmir-based political parties always compromise for the sake of power. To remain in power is more important for these parties rather than to strictly working in accordance with their policies and principles. Today, the National Conference is with Congress , both at the centre and state, it was with the BJP as NDA’s partner in previous coalition government at centre. Similarly, it is sharing power with the same Congress in J&K, which run the government with People’s Democratic Party (PDP) before 2008. Just this example compels a common man to think-whether the political parties boast of working on some specific principles, which according to them are more people-centric and non-compromising. Does the BJP and Congress has the same principles and ideology ? Obviously, the reply will be straight no, never, impossible. Then what is the reason to weigh both national parties in same manner. The reason is very simple. Just watch your own interest, join any coalition and let your principles and ideology be just an eye wash. It is also seen that the coalition also gives birth to corruption. The same can be well guessed by going through the recent surfacing of number of scams and scandals. At centre, the Congress as a major national party in UPA’s coalition,is playing a very flatter role. It has set new records in corrupt practices. Instead of taking effective measures to check corruption, it is defending and shielding all such ministers and MPs, who have been found involved in country’s major scams. How can the so-called honest Prime Minister check these practices when ministers/MPs of his own party are in jail for ignoring the set rules and adopting illegal means to become millionaires in shortest time. One of the reason behind existing corruption is huge spendings during election campaigning by the contesting candidates in their respective constituencies. Lust for money also promotes horse trading in the political field. It can be concluded that besides other factors, coalition system too has been promoting corruption. Although we can not rule out the continuance of coalition culture in the future but the voters should not repeat those candidates who indulged in corrupt practices and brought shame. we can say coalition is an evil but need of the present political situation in the country.
