98 persons found involved in Hawala, more than Rs 1.23 cr recovered

Srinagar, Sep 27 : An amount of Rs 1.23 crore has been recovered from 98 persons in the form of cash and cheques received by them through hawala for funding militants and separatist organisations in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to official information available here, 98 persons, including some women, were found involved in receiving funds through hawala from different countries to provide finance to militant organisations and separatists in the Valley during the past three years.

As many as 66 hawala cases surfaced in 2009 when cash of Rs 77,36,010, cheques worth Rs 50,000 and encashed cheques of Rs one lakh from Itlay were recovered.

However, due to strict measures taken by the government, the number of hawala cases has come down to 15 in 2010 and 17 this year so far.

It said a number of steps had been taken to check the menace of hawala money which is being generally used for carrying out militant and separatist activities in the state.

The central and state intelligence agencies have been tasked to collect information through various means about the hawala money.

On the Line of Control (LoC) trade and travel points, modern equipment are being installed to check the hawala transactions while financial agencies have been provided necessary guidelines to track and check suspicious bank accounts.

Besides, nakas are being established at various places in the state for effective checking, of hawala transactions.

The official information further said highest amount of Rs 21,20,000 as hawala money was recovered on January 22, 2011 and four people were arrested in Srinagar. A car, mobile phones and some incriminating documents were recovered from these persons working for Hizbul Mujahideen (HM).

It said the money was for Mehaz-e-Azadi, Jaish-e-Mohammad, Hizbul Mujahideen, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Al-Badr, Harkat-ul- Mujahideen, Hurriyat Conference (HC), Islamic Students Front, Peoples Conference, Islamic Front and Democratic Freedom Party.
