Govt unlikely to pass Shrines Bill in this session | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 27: Though Kashmiri Pandits are pressing hard for passage of Hindu Shrines and Religious Places Bill, the Government is unlikely to pass the same in the present session of State legislature. Almost all KP organizations including Panun Kashmir are demanding passage of the Bill and the community has also given a mandate to Pt. Prem Nath Bhat Memorial Trust to take up the issue with the Government. Though the Trust has launched a campaign for over last six months in this regard making umpteen appeals to pas the Bill in present session of Assembly. However sources said that the Government under the pressure of some influential people who are running the trusts to manage some KP shrines and temples in Valley are opposed to the passage of the Bill. The management of these trusts have not only opposed the demand but were busy in spreading canards against the community and instead of volunteering themselves to support the move, have blamed the community for present state of affairs of shrines and religious places in Valley. Sources said these trusts have even taken up the issue with Union Government to exert pressure on State Government not to go ahead with its move. The delay in passage of the Bill and deteriorating condition of these religious places has been a cause of concern among the community, sources added. Sources said perturbed over the delaying tactics of the Government in passage of the Bill the KP organizations have decided to solicit the support of all political parties and they have already made an appeal to leaders of NC, PDP, BJP, Congress and NPP as well as independent MLAs in this regard. Though the community is pinning high hopes on the Government that it will concede the demand and pass the Bill in this session, sources said Government has not taken any decision in this regard till date. However the Pandit organizations including the PNB Trust which has taken an onus to launch the campaign in this regard and have decided to meet the civil society of the country to seek their support for the passage of the Bill. Expressing surprise over the delaying tactics of the Government in passage of the Bill Dr RL Bhat a well known writer and representative of the Trust said it is unfortunate that NC when in opposition had itself brought the Bill and the same was not passed as the then Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad assured the House that it will itself bring the Bill in next session. Later in 2007 the Government brought the Bill but same was not taken for debate and passage. Dr Bhat said it is not known when NC -Congress, BJP as well as PDP are in favour of the Bill who are the forces which are opposing the same. Any further delay in passage of the Bill will send a wrong signals among the community and if Government is sincere for passage of the Bill it should not delay the same any more now, he added. Meanwhile renowned Bollywood Producer Mahesh Bhatt who is on the tour of the state at present has also endorsed the Pandits demand to pass the Bill for upkeep and management of Hindu shrines and temples in Valley. Bhatt while talking to a delegation of KPs here said that he will take up the issue with the state as well as Central government. |
