How did SSB arrive at fractions while allotting interview marks? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 27: The state services selection board (SSB) has recently issued a list of teachers selected through short listing and interviews belonging to the Ganderbal district. Although the selection process apparently looks to be transparent and based on merit, what still astonishes almost everybody who looks at the list is the fact that the SSB has allotted marks to candidates during the interview process and these marks have been given up to two decimal points in fractions! Candidates have been given marks broken up to decimal points in fractions and even these decimal point marks have been spread in the most surprising manner. For example, candidates have been given 16.33, 15.67, 18.67, 10.67 etc marks in the interview which is humanly not possible for any interview board to arrive at. Interviews conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, all the state Public Service commissions and all other respected and prestigious recruiting authorities allot marks in whole numbers and never in decimal points. For example, candidates appearing in the interviews for civil services in the J&K Public Service Commission where the total marks reserved for the interview of candidates are 250 have been given 150, 180, 170, 120 and so on and so forth marks depending on their performance in the interview. But, the SSB has digitalized the interview process as well. The people deserve an answer from the chairman of the SSB and its members so that it becomes clear what criteria was used to arrive at digitalizing the marks process during the interviews. The SSB had some time back made it clear through one of its paid advertisements that while allotting marks to the candidates during the interview process the overall academic merit of the candidate was given weight age. This in layman terms means the SSB would to the best of its ability balance the interview marks with the overall merit of the candidates. If the duty of the SSB members is to conduct interviews simply to match credits with the overall merit of the candidate why conduct the interviews at all? Why not simply distribute the interview marks also on the academic credits? And the foremost question still must be answered, how the SSB arrived at fractions while allotting interview marks? The SSB must respond to this through a public awareness advertisement. That alone can address the confusion in the common man's mind about fractional allotment of interview marks. |
