Vulnerable women | 1336 women raped in J&K in past five year | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 28: It an astonishing disclosure, which shows the vulnerability of womenfolk in Jammu and Kashmir, nearly 1336 rape cases have been registered in the state since 2006, in different police stations of the state. As per the government data Jammu district tops the list with 150 incidents, 130 cases were registered in Rajouri. 120 rape cases have taken place in Srinagar in last four years. On the other hand in cold desert of Kargil, government data says that only four rape cases were registered in Kargil, while in border township of Poonch, five rape cases have been registered in past five years. “It is a matter of concern that most of the victims where below the age of 18 years. It shows that women have become very vulnerable in the state in recent years”, sources said. Though the government claims that law has been very stringent against the cases reported, but sources said that in many cases victims are being made to deny the incidents under influence or threat. While the government claims that it is organizing various awareness programs and an effective vigil is being ensured at sensitive locations, where the incidents of rape are high. Meanwhile, social scientists believe that number of rape victims could be much higher as most of the incidents go unreported. They say that till the year 1990, women in Jammu and Kashmir chose to remain within the peripheries of their homes, and basked in the glory of the syncretic traditions, culture and heritage of their respective regions, but in recent years with more interaction with the outside world they have become vulnerable at times. Citing a recent UN global report on women, portrays their disturbing plight of rape victims in India, pointing to high prevalence of physical and sexual violence against them. The report also highlights the measly 3% representation of women in India’s judicial system. Even the UN report has claimed that majority of those surveyed feel that women who are abused by their spouses are to be blamed for their ordeal and that 68 per cent of the respondents felt that provocative clothing was an invitation to rape.
