KC Public School students visit IIIM | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 28: On invitation from Indian Institute of Integrated Medicine, 25 senior secondary students of medical stream visited famed Institute recently and gained first-hand knowledge about landmark strides biotechnology has taken in recent times in its quest for finding effective means against numerous deadly diseases like cancer. Escorted by IIIM staff, students were first taken to synthetic chemistry laboratory where they were shown the process of isolating organic compounds from various plant extracts. Students were also briefed about the high-tech equipment involved in the extraction process. After that, they were taken to Biotechnology Lab and were given intensive knowledge about DNA Fingerprinting and Gel Electrophoresis. The students were very excited when they were shown the Herbarium of the IIIM - an internationally known facility especially recognized by KEW of England. Inside the Herbarium, numerous plant specimens of medicinal use are preserved along with their scientific names inscribed on the containers. The students were also shown Gastropoda-the living fossil of Mollusk. They had a closer look at Herbarium Sheets displaying different families. The last point of their visit was the Pharmacology Lab where they were given an insight into the Animal Tissue Culture and testing of new medicines on animals such as mice etc. All in all, it was a highly enlightening experience for the students to visit IIIM-a veritable goldmine of knowledge in the field of medical research right in the middle of Jammu.
