Afzal Guru clemency resolution | BAJ abstain from court work, lodges protest | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 28: In protest against the resolution moved in the state assembly seeking clemency for Afzal Guru, members of Bar Association Jammu today abstained from court work. Due to non-appearance of bar members in the High Court Wing of Jammu, Subordinate Courts and District Complex, work of respective courts suffered. BAJ organized a massive protest in the court complex. Members of the BAJ raised slogans seeking withdrawal of the resolution seeking mercy for Afzal Guru moved by independent MLA Engineer Abdul Rashid. Members of BAJ opposed the government move of permitting the resolution to be moved in the state assembly. President BAJ B.S.Salathia while addressing the protesting lawyers deplored the recent trend of discussing judicial pronouncements and debating the same in the assembly with intent to prevail upon judgments delivered by courts after thorough scrutiny of facts and law. He further said that the debate over a judicial verdict is direct attack on the independence of judiciary and lawyers cannot be mute spectators to such invasion of the independence of judicial system. He appealed the public in general to raise their voice against trampling of legal system in the country.
