Cong in quandary over Engineer's resolution on Guru | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 28: The Congress Party is in a quandary over the private member's resolution demanding clemency to dreaded terrorist Afzal Guru who is involved in attack on Indian Parliament in 2002. Though Party in the heart of hearts was not in favour of bringing the resolution in the House but under the coalition compulsion it could not voice its concern publicly or oppose the bringing of resolution in the House as its major coalition partner National Conference was interested in the same. According to sources the Congress in the inner party circles has taken serious exception to NC's stand on independent MLA Engineer Rashid's resolution and the Party state president and former Union Minister Saif-ud-Din Soz has had gone to the extent of saying that there should no leniency to the people who are waging a war against the national unity and integrity. To pacify the agitated Congmen from the state who had taken a banner of revolt against the coalition and asked the High Command that Party should come out of alliance as its coalition partner having eye on its political Constituency in Kashmir Valley was damaging the party interests with its negative policies Prof Soz had gone to the extent of saying that Congress has its own perception on national issues and it can't be changed. The Congress leaders have even shown their displeasure over the stand of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah on Guru's issue after supporting clemency for dreaded terrorist. These Congmen have said by such statements the NC was trying political upmanship over its betenoire Peoples Democrats which has made inroads to political bastions of the NC. They apprehend that toeing NC line on clemency to Afzal Guru will prove suicidal for the Party especially in Jammu region where the BJP will take every opportunity to exploit the situation to its advantage. However unflinching support to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah by Party High Command in general and Party general secretary Rahul Gandhi in particular has added to the displeasure of Partymen and forced them to maintain a stoic silence, sources added. Sources said that though Congress had opposed the resolution on Guru should not be listed in the business of the Assembly as such a step will unnecessary provide a chance to its political rivals to exploit the situation in their favour. However the NC did not concede the suggestion of Congress on the plea that such a decision will further strengthen PDP in Kashmir Valley which has already made inroads in NC bastions. To tame PDP the Omar Abdullah led Government hence decided to allow the resolution though it may create further ripples in Congress -NC relations, sources added. However the Congress Party which is quandary is also trying to create such a situation in the House which will bail it out as well as maintain its relations with NC for the time being, sources said, adding if party succeeds in this design it can tide over the wave for the time being. |
