| As per expectations , Jammu Kashmir chief minister Mr Omar Abdullah ,
though beautifully managed the parliament attack convict Afzal Guru
issue in his assembly with the help of his coalition partner Congress
,but his real intention got exposed among those whom he had been
trying to lure through his pro Guru tweets in the past some months .
In my one of the articles about Afzal Guru published on 4th of
September 2011 in various news papers of state and out side under the
caption “ Omar Abdullah in FIX on Afzal Guru issue” , I had made it
clear that Omar Abdullah can not afford to support the clemency
resolution submitted by an independent MLA Sheikh Abdul Rasheed in
assembly .
It is pertinent to mention here that an independent MLA of Jammu
Kashmir legislative assembly , Sheikh Abdul Rashheed had submitted a
resolution in the ongoing autumn session of Jammu and Kashmir assembly
seeking clemency for parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on the lines
of Tamil Nadu assembly which passed a similar resolution in favor of
those convicted in late prime minister Rajive Gandhi’s assassination
case . In fact , observers say , Sheikh Rasheed was inspired for the
initiative with the Tweet of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in which he
had said on a social network site Tweeter that “ If Jammu and Kashmir
assembly would have passed same resolution as Tamil Nadu did , the
response of the nation would have been different”. Observers say ,
Omar Abdullah’s this tweet made many in Kashmir including Sheikh
Rasheed to think that perhaps he wanted to introduce such resolution
in assembly . Inspired with Omar’s tweet drama , analysts say Rasheed
took an initiative and submitted a resolution in the assembly seeking
clemency for Guru on the lines of Tamil Nadu assembly .
With the presentation of this resolution in assembly both Kashmir
centric political parties National Conference and People’s Democratic
Party were caught in a fix . Forced by the popular support to the
Guru resolution in Kashmir valley , People’s Democratic party
announced to support it but Omar Abdullah’s National Conference kept
silence till 28th September , the date resolution was to be discussed
in the house . It is interesting to mention here that till the day
resolution was to be discussed in the assembly , National Conference
leadership remained non committal on the issue whether to support it
or not . However, as per the statements of Omar Abdulah on tweeter ,
most of the people were expecting that National Conference would
support it keeping in view the demand of its Muslim constituency in
valley . But , the reality of Omar Abdullah’s verbal statements got
exposed when till the date of voting on resolution came but he
didn’t issue any whip to his party MLAs to support the resolution .
Instead , he played an other drama saying that his party MLAs would
vote as per their own conscious . Analysts is of the opinion that had
Omar been sincere and serious about this resolution , he would have
definitively issued whip to his party MLAs as it is done in any
important resolution . Not only this, being a leader of the house ,
Omar Abdullah could have brought this resolution himself and sought
help from all parties . But he didn’t , because he knew that by doing
so he can not continue on the chair which he is enjoying with the help
of Delhi only not because of Kashmiries .
The sources say that the drama created by BJP and Congress on the day
resolution was to be discussed suggests that this all was
pre-engineered on behest of Omar Abdullah with an intention to get rid
of the controversy . The silence of his party MLAs also speaks that
they all were well aware of the drama and they kept silence and pave
the way for Congress and BJP to kill the time fixed for this
resolution . Otherwise , both NC and PDP had enough numbers to get
the resolution passed in the assembly even in the absence of Congress
. In this whole drama , the role of opposition PDP has also turned
shabby and shady , because thy too kept silence during the whole
period Congress and BJP members staged their drama . in fact , both
NC and PDP have been exposed on Afzal Guru issue and now none of
them can claim to be savior of Guru as they have been doing in the
past some months .
