JAMMU, Sep 29:The strike of Special Police Officers (SPOs) over the issue of hike in wages and regularization entered fourth consecutive day in various parts of district Udhampur.
The strike call which was given in district Udhampur has also started spreading in other districts. Though repeated assurances were given to the protesting SPOs by the senior police officers but the strike of SPOs is in tact.
The SPOs posted in different locations in district Udhampur including Pancheri, Ram Nagar, Laati and Basantgarh demanded immediate relief to them.
Today SPOs posted at Katra, the base camp of Vaishno Devi shrine, in district Reasi joined the strike. The call was given in the midst of ongoing Navratra festival where a huge flow of yatris is being witnessed and the security is at the maximum alert but with SPOs refusing to preform duties could invite a trouble.
However, the senior police officers intervened and assured the striking SPOs that their demands would be apprised to the government for the redressel of the same. Keeping in view of imminent strike in other districts by the SPOs, the higher rungs reportedly had issued the diktat to SPOs to observe silence.
However, the diktat in stead of curbing the strike has act as a spark. Informed sources said that SPOs are planning to initiate state wise strike. A senior police officer when contacted preferring anonymity expressed his helpless as the matter is to be decided in the floor of assembly.
Earlier, the issue was raised by National Panthers Party (NPP) legislative party leader Haresh Dev Singh in the Legislative Assembly during Zero Hour.

They are being paid Rs 3000 which is violation of minimum wages Act which says that a daily wager be paid Rs 125 per day. It was also a Human Rights violation, he said adding the SPOs are working round the clock risking their lives.
He further alleged that these SPOs are being ignored in selection in police force.
There is a pick and choose in police recruitment, he alleged and said SPOs, Home guards and VDC members are without wages for the past one year.
He wanted to know the steps being taken by the government for the welfare of SPOs, Home guards and VDC members.
Law and Parliamentary affairs minister Ali Mohammad Sagar said that the matter of SPOs has already been taken up with the centre in July this year.
He said the wages of SPOs will be raised from Rs 3000 to Rs 5000 which though was not enough.
Sagar said those who have completed three years in service and have some experience in conducting operations or ITI certificate will be considered for permanent employment.
