Blessings too need to be changed to save girl child | `Putri Wati Bhav' | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 29: Ever since the Census Department gave the dwindling girl-boy ratio, lot of crocodile tears have been shed to `save the girl child'. The state government has taken steps ranging from seizure of USG machines from private clinics to a massive media campaign to set the ratio right. However, not only the mindset but the words used to bless a married woman need to be changed as well to achieve the goal. But is it possible? Putra Wati Bhaw (May God bless you with a baby boy). This is how elderly people bless women. How can things change? Be the change you want in the world, thus said Gandhiji. People have changed and so has their outlook and thinking. But the one sentence that reflects the mindset of the people has not change. It was used when Lord Krishna was around and it is being used today. And if the girl ratio has gone down who is to own responsibility? The attitude of the people can be gauged from the story of a woman, her daughter-in-law and her cow. Every year she would get her cow impregnated through artificial insemination. A few days before delivery, she would go to saints and sages to ensure birth of a female calf. She would repeat the exercise whenever her daughter-in-law stayed pregnant. However, for her son she would seek a baby boy. But as ill luck would have it, her daughter-in-law gave birth to as many as four daughters in quick succession and her cow delivered male calves only.
