J&K Assembly victims of Omar's Tweets, not national politics: Mehbooba | 'By revealing names of rape victims, Govt has ruined 1300 families' | | Ahmed Ali Fayyaz SRINAGAR, Sept 29: Contesting her arch rival Omar Abdullah's contention that J&K Legislative Assembly had become a victim of the national politics over Afzal Guru resolution, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today held the Chief Minister responsible for first stoking the fire with his Tweets and later getting the mercy motion scuttled. "Omar Abdullah got the State Assembly involved when he tweeted about Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution (seeking clemency for Rajiv Gandhi killers). Omar had a moral obligation to ensure that the resolution is discussed and put to vote. Instead, he looked entertained by the Congress-BJP drama, threw smiles and made no attempt to discipline his coalition partner", Mehbooba told reporters while addressing a hurriedly organised new conference at her Gupkar Road residence. She claimed that Chief Minister could have comfortably pacified the coalition legislators and Ministers on the issue and paved the way for consideration and passage of the resolution. Chief Minister's electronic bravado, according to her, fell flat when he was caught between the devil and the deep sea in Assembly yesterday. "He deceived the people with his silence, smiles and escapism", she alleged. She asserted that the state Assembly had become the worst causality of the Chief Minister's Tweets. "Marshals are always let loose on our MLAs whenever they raise their voice even with slight intensity. Why did not Speaker call them when Congress and BJP MLAs danced on the tables in front of him yesterday?" Mehbooba asked. The PDP President expressed surprise that Speaker conversely taunted her and her colleagues with being calm and silent during the proceedings on Wednesday. "When we raise our voice we are dubbed as disruptionists, when we remain silent we are questioned over our silence", she said. "I'm sure Mr Akbar Lone must be the only Speaker in this country who has objection over the members' silence and discipline", she added. She asserted that Speaker should not toe his party's line and promote the political interest of his own party. Mehbooba alleged that the Government, in league with Speaker, resorted to a host of machinations to fail the resolution on Guru. "First, the timing was changed without any knowledge of the Business Advisory Committee. I pointed out to Speaker that my party, which is the single largest opposition party, was not even informed about the curtailment of the Business hours. Still, I assured him of our total cooperation with the expectation that he would neutralize the drama of scuttling the resolution. But, he failed us and clashed with us without reason", she added. "We assured him we will not disrupt the proceedings of the house and behaved properly. Though there were important issues on the agenda, we remained silent," Mehbooba said. Mehboba also blasted the government for revealing identities of 1300 rape victims in reply to a question in the Assembly. "Disclosure of names and identity of rape victims is the most unethical thing", she said with a reference to directives from National Commission on Women and Supreme Court of India. "By making this disclosure, J&K Government has destroyed the life of 1300 families. It's a serious offence," Mehbooba said. "It has further degraded the sanctity of the Assembly. Though Assembly has the prerogative but it should have been used for honor and dignity of the victims rather than stigmatizing them publicly," she added. |
