JAMMU, Sept 29: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, his Home Minister Nasir Aslam Wani and other self-acclaimed nationalist politicians preferred parliament attack convict Afzal Guru over participating in the funeral procession of Lt. Sushil Khajuria who achieved martyrdom while bravely fighting terrorist in Kupwara on September 27.
Khajuria was a youngman from Samba district, a state subject whose martyrdom added to the peace building process of Jammu and Kashmir, something about which Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his coterie talks off and on. The young man gave his life to ensure that not only the commoners but the high profile VVIPs i.e. Omar and his political friends live a safe and trouble free life.
It is same coterie including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah which does not miss an opportunity to reach to those killed in terrorist violence or those who get killed in routine stone-pelting incidents across Kashmir. By keeping distance from martyr Lt. Sushil Khajuria funeral procession, political elite of Jammu and Kashmir has made it amply clear that what does not fetch them votes and banner headlines is not their concern.
None from the political elite bothered to salute this brave youngman. Commoners from all walks of life joined the last rites of this brave officer. Tears rolled down the cheeks of Sambaites as they participated in the final journey of martyr Lt Sushil Khajuria. The entire route of the funeral procession was crowded with people showering flower petals and placing garlands on his coffin to pay their homage to the soldier who laid down his life while fighting terrorists in Kashmir.
Hundreds of local villagers lined up the streets and paid floral tributes to the army officer before his dead body, draped in Indian tricolour arrived at his house. Hailing from Sangwali village in the Ghagwal area of Samba district, Sushil Khajuria was commissioned into the Army on March 20, 2010. He was attached with 18 Grenadiers and was posted in the Kupwara sector.
Nirmala Khajuria, mother of the martyred officer cried inconsolably before bidding farewell to her loving son while Som Dutt Khajuria, father of the army officer along with his two elder sons, Anil and Sunil Khajuria serving in the Indian army also were joined by large number of friends and schoolmates of Lt Sushil Khajuria to pay glowing tributes at his village where the last rites were performed.
“Sushil was to marry early next year,” said one of his friend in his deep sighs. Senior officers of the Indian army were present on the occasion and saluted the brave officer after wreath laying ceremony. The last rites of the brave officer were performed with full military honour. Commercial establishments voluntarily remained closed as a mark of respect in the area today.
Soon after the death of Khajuria a page on facebook saluting the hero was created that has been joined by a large number of friends who have paid honour to the martyr. Sushil was a known face in the University of Jammu and regularly visited there to meet his friends. He wanted to join the armed forces since he was a child but the parents of Lt Sushil never thought that they will receive their son’s dead body only after one and a half year of his joining the Indian army.
Lt Sushil Khajuria, commissioned in the Indian army in March 2010 was participating in the anti-insurgency operation launched in Trehgam area of Kupwara since September 26. He attained martyrdom on September 27 after killing two militants from close range and he fell to the bullets of militants, who had taken shelter behind the natural caves. Official sources said that the brave army officer was hit by militants while he was retrieving injured soldiers to safety during the operation.
