| Pesticide effect on cattle now; Animal Husbandry team visits Samba | | | Samba, Dec 07 The pesticide factories in Samba has now attracted the attention of Animal Husbandry department which today send a team of experts to investigate the adverse effects of poisonous gases on cattle population in th area. About one week back, farmers of Tanda, Sapwal, Pandoo and Raipura held a protest demonstration and demanded closure of factories manufacturing pesticide inside Samba-SIDCO Industrial Complex. They alleged that the poisonous gases emitting out of the factories is spoiling their standing crops. Following the protest and reports in print media government came into action and ordered suspension of production in seven factories. A team of official which visited Samba Industrial estate, on finding these factories violating PCB norms, asked the owners to suspend the production of pesticides. Sources said the effluents from factories flow directly into Basantar stream polluting its waters. The farmers had also complained that their cattle have developed various ailments as most of them drink water from the said rivulet. Sources said that the visiting team from Animal Husbandry today visited the area and colleted samples from the river. Despite protest by farmers, the pollution Control Board which is entrusted to enforce anti pollution norms was allegedly sleeping over the matter for a long time. It is only after the reports about the adverse effects of effluents and gases generated during the production of pesticides in these factories that the Pollution Control board and Government raised from its deep slumber. “A committee comprising seven head of departments including Principal Secretary Agriculture production, Principal Secretary Industries and Commerce and Chairman PCB to investigate the matter and file a comprehensive report to the Government” PCB chairman R.D Tiwari said. The team visited the industrial area and on finding some of the factories violating the PCB norms asked them to suspend production, Tiwari added. |
