Walk-out by NPP members demanding regularisation of SPOs | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR:Sept 30: The National Panthers Party members today staged a walk-out from the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly after they did not get any response to their demand for regularisation of Special Police Officers (SPOs) who are on strike for the past few days. Immediately after the Question-Hour was over, Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone announced that since today is Friday, there would be no Zero-Hour, the house will take up Calling Attention matters of urgent public importance. However, NPP member Balwant Singh Mankotia was allowed to speak by the speaker who wanted to raise the issue of SPOs. More than 10,000 SPOs on dharna in their respective area of posting, he said and criticised the government for adopting alleged indifferent attitude towards their problems. Leader of the NPP in the House Harish Dev Singh also joined him and demanded the regularisation of SPOs and Home Guards. The SPOs are being paid just Rs 3000 per month, which was against the minimum wage Act of the State, Mr Singh said adding it was also against their Human Rights. He said all SPOs and Home Guards are on strike demanding increase in their wages. The members of the NPP came in the front row after the Speaker asked them to allow other business, raising slogans demanding increase in the wages and regularisation of SPOs and Home Guards. “It was because of the sacrifices made by the SPOs, we could control the militancy in the state,” the NPP members were shouting. Mr Singh further alleged that these SPOs were being ignored in selection in police force. There is a pick and choose in police recruitment, he alleged and wanted to know the steps being taken by the government for the welfare of SPOs, Home guards and VDC members. A Congress member Abdul Majid Wani also supported NPP demand and said it was an important issue. The members wanted a reply from the treasury benches since it was an important issue, which was rejected by the Speaker who said there are much more important issues then SPOs. Later, the NPP member walked out from the House after shouting slogans against the government for some time.
