Will CM's apology do any good to rape survivors? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 30: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today tendered an unconditional apology for disclosing the identity of the rape survivors in the Legislative assembly. "I in the capacity of the Home Minister tender an unconditional apology for the serious lapse", he said. The government furnished a list of rape survivors in the assembly. Contrary to precedents, the names and addresses of the survivors were also disclosed. Some members including Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mahbooba Mufti felt that the lapse on the part of the government would have serious bearing on the future life of the survivors. Mahbooba demanded an apology from the Home minister. Concerned people have expressed serious concern over alarming increase in the number of rapes committed during the past few years in the state. "This will not do any good to the government. This is an admission that the law and order situation has deteriorated to this extent during Omar's rule", they said. The separatists have their own explanation to offer. "The government wants to ascribe the reason for increase in rapes to the on-going movement. But it reflects how government has failed to save the life and honour of the citizens ", a Hurriyat activist said. Siraj-ud-Din Advocate believes the government not only failed to protect the honour of women of the state but also defamed them by disclosing their identity on the floor of the house. |
