Over 2 lakh SIM cards blocked in valley | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Oct 1:Two major cellular companies operating in the Kashmir valley have barred over 2 lakh prepaid SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) cards 'due to improper registration'. The move have resulted in inconvenience to mobile phone users in the region where Short Message Service on prepaid phones is already banned. The move comes days after Home Ministry had called a meeting of CEOs of cellular companies to discuss real time monitoring of communication over cell phones and the internet. Sources in Aircel said that 1.50 lakh SIM cards were barred yesterday evening after they were found to have improper documentation. The government has already banned the SMS in the region last year owing to the violent civil protests that have led to death of hundreds of people. Sources in telecom giant Airtel said that they also had to bar over 50,000 SIM cards after documentation was found inadequate.
