Sham calls for launching mass movement for voluntary blood donation | National voluntary Blood Donation Day observed in GCE | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 01- Stressing the need for launching a mass movement for voluntary blood donation, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma has said significance of this human cause must be understood by each one so that every individual contributes voluntarily with all enthusiasm. He said blood donation is a greatest gesture and it gives divine feeling Addressing a large gathering of cross section of people at a National Voluntary Blood Donation Day function organized by the AIDS Control Society in collaboration with Government Colleges of Education (GCE) at M. A. Road here today, the Minister said that voluntary and social organizations should step up their efforts to motivate more and more people, particularly the students to donate blood generously for the human cause so that adequate quantity of blood is made available in all the hospitals to save many precious lives. He appreciated the efforts of some social organizations, including Sant Nirankari Mission, Hussani Blood Bank and IRCS for contributing major component of blood to the society by holding frequent blood donation camps across the state. He said the awareness must be created by holding seminars, camps and through the medium of electronic and print media. Teachers and students could be the best ambassadors for spreading the message about this human cause and asked heads of the educational institutions to provide value based education to the students, which should include inculcation of sense of responsibility and duties of a citizen towards society and nation so that a healthy environment was created, Mr. Sham added. The Minister also strongly advocated for curbing the menace of female feticide, saying that situation is so alarming and society must cooperate in dealing with this serious issue. He specifically appealed to the women folk to help in saving the female child to maintain the equal sex ratio. Only government efforts are not adequate to tackle this social issue, but entire society is responsible for the situation and all right thinking people, including social / religious organizations have to put their efforts to keep a check on this menace, the Minister asserted. He also appealed the younger generation, particularly the student community to take a pledge to keep away from the social evils like drug addiction, smoking and also for observing human values to prevent the dreaded diseases like AIDS. He said the biggest challenge before the nations is to fight corruption and only younger generation can help rooting out this menace which is eating the vitals of the society.
